I'm invited to my friend's daughter's wedding at the end of the month. I am torn between a check (can use right now) and a savings bond. I thought the savings bond would be a fun idea, because so many people put them away and discover them years later - it could trigger some nice memories down the road.

Then again, cash might be more useful now for a young couple.

What do you think?

Cash for sure. Savings bonds are not very good investments and we always cash ours out as soon as we can.

cash . If they want to invest, it gives them the option to choose where/how.

Cash. We actually ended up using some of the cash we received the night of the wedding because we didn't plan well enough :D We were VERY thankful!

I'm for the cash also!

I vote cash, too. :-)

CASH. While DH and I were planning our wedding, we spent every last dime we had on it, had NO extra money at all left over. We had reserved a week at the Poconos for a honeymoon, but it was DEPENDENT on how much money we got for our wedding! We spent our wedding night going through all the envelopes and counting the cash we had! SO THANKFUL that our guests were so very generous that we were able to take our wonderful honeymoon...good thing too, I had my dd 9 mo after that and we haven't been on a trip alone since then! LOL

Okay...cash is nice, but a savings bond is a nice way to start just that...savings...

You could do a cute note about putting something way for a get away to stave off the seven year itch (I think they're redeemable after 7 years...but I'm not sure)...I think it's a good idea...

As far as whether or not they're a good investment, I don't know. I'm not commenting on that, just the idea.

Cash for me, but either would be nice:)!

Cash - when we got married it really helped with the honeymoon expenses and getting settled.

I vote for a pampered chef gift certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of receiving cash as a wedding gift?

Receiving cash as a wedding gift offers immediate flexibility. Couples can use the money for various expenses, such as honeymoon costs, home renovations, or paying off debts. Cash can also be saved for future needs, making it a versatile option.

What are the benefits of receiving a savings bond as a wedding gift?

A savings bond is a long-term investment that can grow over time, providing a future financial benefit. It encourages savings and can be a thoughtful gift that symbolizes a couple's future together. Additionally, savings bonds can often be redeemed for a higher value than their purchase price after a certain period.

How do couples typically decide between cash and a savings bond?

Couples often consider their immediate financial needs and future goals when deciding between cash and a savings bond. If they have pressing expenses or plans, cash may be preferred. Conversely, if they are focused on long-term savings, a savings bond might be more appealing.

Are there any tax implications for receiving cash or a savings bond as a wedding gift?

Generally, cash gifts are not taxable for the recipient, but the giver may need to report it if it exceeds the annual gift tax exclusion limit. Savings bonds may also have tax implications, particularly when they are redeemed, as the interest earned is subject to federal income tax. Couples should consult a tax professional for specific advice.

What should guests consider when choosing between cash and a savings bond for a wedding gift?

Guests should consider the couple's financial situation and preferences. If the couple has expressed a preference for cash or has specific needs, that should guide the decision. Additionally, guests might think about the sentimental value of a savings bond versus the practicality of cash.
