I have an aunt who loves PC, but my uncle seems to have problems following the care instructions. She's had to replace her ice cream scoop once already b/c he put in the dishwasher...just last week, my cousin put her new one in there too! Later that day, she walked into the kitchen to find my uncle scrubbing her stoneware with tons and tons of soap!!! She was telling me this at our Christmas dinner, so I tried explaining to him that it doesn't need soap - he insists that there's no other way to get it clean! lol I told her that she'll just have to ban him from the kitchen.

Anyone know someone like this? How do you handle them?? lol

Once in twice in the dishwasher for the scoop won't kill it...now 10 times will! It just doesn't look shiny and new. So forgive him once and slap his hand and keep him away.Stones...well, that's a whole different battle. You'll have to give him a manual to read about seasoning, non-stick surfaces and nylon scrapers. Luckily our stones aren't very porous so he may not have killed them yet. :)

There's a letter in the files by a microbiologist, about why soap isn't necessary. That's a good handout to give to your uncle.

Apparently he put the first one in there a lot - and never told her about it! lol It was pretty much shot. I'm hoping that this was the first time the new one has been in there. :)

Thanks Ann, I'll have to look for it.

I actually had a host a couple of months ago who said she always uses a dap of soap on stoneware b/c she's such a clean freak. I don't think she ever believed that it wasn't necessary. Maybe she needs a copy too! lol

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my uncle accidentally burns the food?

If your uncle burns the food, first assess the situation. If it's salvageable, try to scrape off the burnt parts and add some seasonings to enhance the flavor. If it's beyond saving, it's best to start over. Consider using this as a learning moment and suggest cooking together to prevent future mishaps.

How can I help my uncle if he spills ingredients everywhere?

In the event of a spill, remain calm and offer to help clean up. Quickly gather paper towels or a cloth to wipe up the mess. If the spill involves liquids, ensure to soak it up immediately to prevent slipping hazards. After cleaning, reassure your uncle that accidents happen and encourage him to continue cooking.

What should I do if my uncle uses the wrong ingredients?

If your uncle uses the wrong ingredients, assess how it affects the recipe. If it's a minor substitution, you might be able to adjust the recipe accordingly. If it's a major error, suggest starting over or modifying the dish to incorporate the incorrect ingredients in a creative way. Encourage him to embrace the unexpected outcome.

How can I prevent my uncle from making common kitchen mistakes?

To help prevent common kitchen mistakes, consider providing a simple checklist or guide for him to follow while cooking. Offer to cook together, allowing you to guide him through the process. Additionally, encourage him to read through the recipe thoroughly before starting to ensure he understands each step and ingredient.

What should I do if my uncle is frustrated with his cooking mistakes?

If your uncle becomes frustrated with his cooking mistakes, offer emotional support and remind him that everyone makes mistakes in the kitchen. Share your own cooking mishaps to lighten the mood. Encourage him to take a break, and suggest revisiting the dish later with a fresh perspective. Reinforce that cooking is a learning experience.
