I am cooking a whole turkey this year, we are having a friend get-together Sunday to play games, I have a 20 pound turkey.

Just wondered if anyone has cooked a whole turkey in the rectangular lid/bowl and rectangle deep dish baker before, any tips, suggestions.

I am going to use the recipe with leeks and granny smith apples in the celebrate cookbook I think. I also plan on brining the turkey to make it really moist.

Also anyone have any turkey salad recipes that are good for the leftovers (if there are any).

I did!I just cooked a turkey in the rectangle baker two days ago and it came out perfect! It was just the breast, with bone, but it was so juicy and perfectly golden brown . . . Yum! I got great pan drippings to make gravy, and of course it was a breeze to clean! I actually roasted mine skin side down for the first two hours, then flipped it over to brown the top. This keeps the white meat from drying out. HTH!

Jennifer, did you put any veggies in the bottom to make a rack? Or did you just place the turkey directly in the stoneware?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to prepare a whole turkey for cooking?

To prepare a whole turkey, start by thawing it in the refrigerator for several days, depending on its size. Once thawed, remove the giblets and neck from the cavity. Rinse the turkey inside and out with cold water and pat it dry with paper towels. Season the turkey generously with salt, pepper, and your choice of herbs and spices, both inside the cavity and on the skin. For added flavor, consider stuffing the cavity with aromatics like onions, garlic, and fresh herbs.

How long should I cook a whole turkey?

The cooking time for a whole turkey depends on its weight. A general rule of thumb is to cook the turkey for about 13-15 minutes per pound at 325°F (163°C). For example, a 15-pound turkey will take approximately 3 to 3.5 hours to cook. Always use a meat thermometer to ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part of the breast and thigh.

Should I cover the turkey while it cooks?

It is recommended to cover the turkey with aluminum foil for the first part of the cooking process to prevent the skin from browning too quickly. Remove the foil during the last hour of cooking to allow the skin to crisp up and achieve a golden-brown color. Keep an eye on the turkey to ensure it doesn’t over-brown; if necessary, you can re-cover it with foil.

What are some side dishes that pair well with turkey for a Sunday get-together?

Some popular side dishes that pair well with turkey include mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, roasted vegetables, and sweet potato casserole. Don't forget to serve gravy made from the turkey drippings for added flavor. A fresh salad can also complement the meal nicely.

How do I carve a whole turkey after cooking?

To carve a whole turkey, let it rest for at least 20-30 minutes after cooking to allow the juices to redistribute. Start by removing the legs and thighs by cutting through the joint connecting them to the body. Next, slice the breast meat by making long, even cuts from the top of the breast down to the bone. Finally, arrange the carved meat on a platter and serve with your favorite sides.
