Since there was a thread started for Waves 1 & 2, I figured I would start one for those of us that are in Wave 3!

It's Thursday, March 19, 2009.
There are 119 days until National Conference 2009, Wave 3

(I stole this information from the Wave 1 thread!) Start thinking about how many rooms you need, if you want to reserve your room through Exper. you need to do it the first day, so your not put on a waiting list. Remember 1st night down.

If you do a non conference hotel & book online it's all upfront.

We need to start posting tips/helpful hints like Rae did last year!!
One of the best suggestions I got was to buy a pair of Merrell shoes. I got a pair of Merrell sandals and my feet never bothered me at all during conference, unlike a lot of girls in my cluster!!!

Don't worry. I ask permission before I take over. I'm a benevolent invader. However, resistance is futile. LOL!

Merrells are the BEST! I wear them almost every day, and when I was working as a Personal Chef, I wore them every day I worked. I could stand on my feet for 12-14 hours a day, and my feet wouldn't hurt. I tried every kind of shoe - spent a fortune in a quest for a good shoe - and Merrells won hands down!

Beth, once registration opens there will be information from the HO on how to dress and what to bring. Basically, it's business casual, but no jeans or shorts. You'll want to make sure you have comfortable shoes. There's a lot of walking.

Once we start sharing tips, there will be a few suggestions about additional things to bring, things to leave at home, and things you can share with your roommates.

Today is April 15. There are only 92 days left until the start of National Conference.

Have you filed your taxes yet? Speaking of taxes, remember that much of your National Conference trip will be tax deductible. Be sure to keep track of everything. Now, while taxes are fresh in your mind, is a good time to set up whatever system you'll use for categorizing your NC deductions.

Beth1170
04-15-2009, 08:51 AM
Exactly what part of conference will be a deduction? Would you mind giving an example of how to categorize? Again, this is my first time attending and I don't want to overlook even the simplest thing. Thanks so much.

raebates
04-15-2009, 12:27 PM
A tax person will be the best person to really help you categorize. I keep things in different categories, then combine them as needed to put into my return.

Just about everything but souvenirs will be tax deductible. Generally, this is how mine are divided:

Travel: mileage (and airfare, if necessary), tolls, cab fare (and the tip), etc.
Lodging: hotel
Meals: including meals on the way to and from conference and tips
Business Supplies: you'll have a chance to buy mini-catalogs and recipe cards
Training Expenses: registration and any further training materials such as CDs you might purchase there

Today is April 18. There are only 89 days left until the start of Wave 3!

I haven’t seen anything about dress code for this year, but I’ll assume that it will be similar to what it’s been in the past. Here’s the official word from last year:

Pampered Chef requires that at all official Pampered Chef functions you dress business casual. No denim or shorts. Chicago can be hot in the summer, but keep in mind that you are indoors most of the time and the air conditioner can be chilly. Packing a light blazer or sweater is a good idea since you can easily take it on and off when needed.

There are those who will argue that they should be allowed to (or always have, or by golly intend to) wear their denim and/or shorts. Be that as it may, the HO has set the rules, and I am an inveterate rule follower. (Remember, I’m not trying to start a fight or a huge discussion. I’m just trying to offer helpful hints so the countdown doesn’t get boring.)

Start now to take a good look at your available wardrobe in light of the rules. If there’s something you need to add, you have almost 3 months to search out sales, resale shops, and consignment shops for whatever you need. If you start now, you won’t be as tempted to spend a lot just to get something.

I wonder if there will be any way to earn extra ribbons this year. For newbies, when you get your name badge you'll receive a first-timer's ribbon to attach to your badge. Directors and above have special ribbons. There are buttons, ribbons, and lanyards for things like earnings, recruiting, and charitable giving.

You'll probably only have a few cluster/team meetings between now and NC. Write down anything you want to discuss with your clustermates so you can ask at the meetings. What do they usually do during down time? Do they usually move about as a group or will you be mostly on your own? Do they usually choose expensive restaurants, mid-range meals, or cheap & cheerful cuisine? Your roommates and travel buddies will be good sources of info.

Begin now making a list of the things you hope to learn at NC. If you’ve never been before, think about what you most want to know. Write down your questions. Read them over frequently. This will plant them in your brain, and you’ll be more likely to recognize an answer when you hear it. That’s one of the best things you can do to prepare your mind for NC.

Thinking about staying in the Hard Rock in Chicago. It is .9 miles away from the Hilton where I could get on the Conference Bus (at least that is what I was told. can i take the bus if I am not staying at hilton?) Would that be insane to walk/get a taxi/be dropped off there?

The room is $111 a night right now and is soooo much nicer than the Travelodge for the same price. (Travelodge is .2 miles away from HIlton).

Any thoughts or helpful hints/suggestions would he great! Thanks in advance!

Today is April 28. There are only 80 days left until the start of Wave 3.

I was able to see the guy from What Not to Wear at an event I worked recently. He pointed out that fit is the first element of style, and when your clothes fit right they'll be comfortable. He also said that on the show they shop for 2 solid days and consider themselves lucky if they find 7 outfits.

If the only clothes you have that would be appropriate for NC aren't comfortable, you need to do something. You can have the clothes you already have altered. Or, you can buy new. Just remember that it can take lots of time to find clothing that fits your body and your budget.

Here are a few more suggestions I gleaned from Clinton Kelly:

Try everything on.

If you can't immediately picture it with at least 3 things already in your closet, don't buy it. You'll be wasting money and closet space.

A bit of alteration (a dart here, hem there) can make all the difference.

heather223
04-28-2009, 09:02 AM
I love that show! Rae is also right- if your are not comfortable in your clothes you will not be comfortable at Conference. Take it from someone who knows! I will be going shopping soon for some new COMFORTABLE clothes for conference.

Today is April 29. There are only 79 days left until the start of Wave 3.

If your loved ones are questioning your desire to go to NC, do your best to include them in the excitement.

Use CS to talk incessantly about NC. Your family probably doesn't want to hear constant chatter about it. However, do make sure they know that you'll miss them; you'll bring them souvenirs; and they'll benefit from the extra money you'll make because of the business boost you'll get.

Start a file. I keep 2 NC files--1 in a manila folder, the other on my computer. This is where I keep all NC materials--confirmations, receipts, lists, etc. I use the computer file for anything I don't want to waste a lot of paper on. The folder is for anything I might want to take with me (like a hotel confirmation).

Getting organized now helps me to stay organized all the way through NC.

Today is May 1. There are only 76 days left until the start of Wave 3.

Somehow I got off track with my count, so we have 1 day less than I thought. Gee, it's coming quick.

This brings something important to mind. Always double-check. It's easy to get used to relying on your director, your recruiter, your clustermates, or your friends here at CS for information. We're good, but we're not perfect. The best source of information is the HO. Make sure you're reading what they send and what's posted on CC.

ETA: Found where I went wrong. I'm such a doofus sometimes.

I like to look my best at NC. Since I have colored hair in a fairly short style, that means making sure that my cut and color are pretty fresh. I've already set my appointments for the next couple of months so I can make sure I'm feeling cute for NC.

If this is a concern for you as well, you might want to make your appointment now. Make sure your stylist be available when you need him/her.

Today is May 4. There are only 73 days left until the start of Wave 3.

Yesterday I talked about looking good. Today I want to remind you to do what you can to make sure you feel good. NC is physically and mentally stressful. It's good stress, but it's still stress. You have just over 10 weeks to prepare yourself. Here are my suggestions:

Make getting rest a priority. If you're not well rested when you arrive, you're likely to struggle. After all, there's lots to do, so you might be staying up late and getting up early. Most people don't sleep as well in a strange bed. Most of us will be sharing a room with others, which can impair your sleep. These won't be as much of an issue if your sleep bank is full to begin with.

Start walking. There is a lot of walking at NC. Get moving now so you won't feel like you've been hit by a truck on day 2.

Eat well. Fueling your body with good food in the weeks ahead is a good way to make sure you're healthy and energetic when you arrive at NC.

Who knows? It's possible that these will become good habits that will become part of a healthy lifestyle that lasts long after this NC.

Today is May 6. There are only 71 days left until the start of Wave 3.

Ken Davis shared these ideas on a recent blog. He was talking about how to get the most out of the conferences he does, but I think they translate well to NC.

Make these resolutions to help you maximize your experiences:

1. Resolve to Relax

So many times we go into new situations tense and defensive, fearful of change and concerned about what people will think. We assume a negative posture that stifles creativity and inhibits learning.

Anticipate a great experience
Believe that you will learn something helpful
Don’t set yourself up to compete. You have nothing to prove. Learning is not competition it is absorption. Become a happy Sponge Bob Square Pants. Soak it up!

2. Resolve to Disarm
We put it this way, “Leave your guns at the door.” All those little tricks and stories and shortcuts that you usually use when the pressure is on; the candy stick, shoot from the hip easy way out solutions that keep you from trying new things, leave them at the door.

Open yourself up to learn new techniques. Risk by exploring new ideas. When you leave the conference you can pick up your guns and take them with you. You may not need them anymore. OR you may find them more affective with the new material you have learned. By leaving them at the door you will resist the temptation to depend on them and miss out on learning something new.

3. Resolve to connect
Dive in. Introduce yourself to instructors and other attendees. Ask questions, offer insight. Eat and talk and laugh with other people. TURN YOUR PHONE OFF!

In twenty years of doing workshops I can count on one hand and half of one foot the number of people who said they got nothing out of it. ALL OF THEM remained isolated and refused to get involved with the people around them. Some felt they knew it all. Usually those were sent by someone who knew they didn’t. Others never disconnected from phone - computer - business, so even though they were physically at the conference, mentally they never left the office.

4. Resolve to commit
I ask our students to commit to what we are teaching just for the length of the conference. Long enough to try the principles, get past the discomfort of doing something NEW, and experience the difference it will make in their performance. Once they leave, I give them permission to dump the whole thing and shoot me with the guns they left at the door, BUT BY THEN THEY ARE HOOKED. [Rae's Note: I'd change this just a bit. I'd resolve to commit to the new ideas for more than just the time of the conference. Give yourself a few weeks, a month or two, to try the new stuff.]

The new grip suggested by a golf pro seems intolerable until you commit to practice it until it becomes natural. Only then will you hit the 250 yard drive or sink the 15 foot putt.

Try these resolutions the next time you are at a conference.

Are your hotel reservations set? If you're staying at a conference hotel, make sure you have all of your roommates listed (with consultant numbers). This really will make things easier in the long run.

Happy Mothers Day to everyone who shows loving care to others. Whether you've got children of your own or not, you're a mom.

Thinking about Mothers Day got me thinking about expressing appreciation. My recruiter is no longer with PC. While I'm at NC I usually send her a postcard thanking her for what she did to introduce me to the PC business. It's simple, but little things like that often mean a lot. If there is someone who has helped you in your business, consider expressing your gratitude.

We have just over 2 months before NC. You'll probably have several shows in that time. You'll do host coaching. You'll make lots of calls. Start taking a critical look at what you're doing, why you're doing it, and how it's working.

Here are a few reasons I can think of for taking a close look at your business before NC.

1. You'll know what areas to target when you're asking questions and taking workshop notes.

2. You'll know what's working well. You're likely to be asked for tips and advice while at NC. By really studying your business, you'll know what to tell those who ask.

3. You'll have a chance to make your business better before you even go. You may discover areas where you can change or streamline to make your business what you want it to be.

Be sure to edit your home numbers and your cluster mates in your cell phone to include the area codes.

Good suggestion, Bobby. That leads to a thought about today's tip. Make sure you have your roommates' and clustermates' numbers programmed into your phone. That will help you keep track of one another and adjust plans if necessary.

Many of us Cheffers will also share numbers. I program these under "Cheffer - [Name]" in my phone. It makes it easier for my brain to find the person I'm looking for.

I also take a hard copy of all of the numbers (roommates, clustermates, and Cheffers), just in case I have trouble with my phone. If something happens, I want to be able to use another phone to call.

Did you see in the Newswire yesterday that there will be more info in the June CN about a special July incentive if we attend conference? :sing::sing::sing:

New on Consultant's Corner This Week ...

* The National Conference 2009 page has been updated to include two testimonials from Consultants who attended National Conference last year in Chicago.

Plus: Hold and submit two Shows in July and attend National Conference and you'll receive an exclusive promotional item available only to Conference attendees (see the June Consultant News for details). Register today!

You'll be so happy you decided to go. No, scrubs and jeans won't be appropriate, but you've got plenty of time to find great deals on comfy, appropriate clothing.

One of the things we usually get when we register is a tote of some kind. There will be an announcement soon about this year’s tote (assuming there is one). I take the things I want to be sure to carry with me (paper, pens, snacks and such) in a plastic bag. This way I can fold up the bag or toss it as soon as I get everything situated in my new tote.

Not taking along a laptop? Go ahead and set up your email auto response today. Most email services let you set a start and end date for vacation responses. I usually set mine to start the day I leave and end a couple of days after I get back. That gives me a little time to get around to reading through all of the emails. I simply say that I’m off learning how to become an even better consultant and getting a sneak peek at the new products that will be out this fall. I leave my cell number so they can get to me if they have a PC emergency.

I want you to make me a promise. If you take a picture of me at NC you’ll make sure that you’re taking it from slightly above my eye line and not below it. People look better from this angle. With digital cameras it’s common for people to hold the camera down just under their own eye line or even under their own chin level. If you’ll hold it slightly above your eyes (or even better, a little above your head--especially if you're short like me), your subjects will look better. People will love you for it. Start practicing now so it will be habit by the time you take pictures at NC.

Don't forget to add the contact information for your shows in the few weeks after NC and postcard stamps to your packing list. While you're in Chicago, pick up some postcards, and send them to those hosts with a note that you're learning lots of great things to help make their shows a success.

Think ahead tip: Buy extra postcards this year and put them away. Before your next NC trip, write, address, and stamp your postcards. That way you’ll just have to pop them in the mail once you arrive.

I do this every time I'm gone for a few days, and I've never had any trouble. I'm not a director, so maybe the emails they get are different. I've never had any trouble with PC or any other emails bouncing back and forth. If it's one of the automated things (like a thanks-for-contacting-the-HO notice or weekly update), the vacation announcement goes nowhere.

Very few hotel rooms have enough convenient electrical outlets. If you're staying 4 to a room, you may want to make sure at least one of you brings along an outlet strip. That way everyone can plug in their cell phone to charge for the night. Also, if the only outlet is under the desk, you'll only have to crawl under there twice (once to plug it in, and once to unplug it) instead of twice a day to plug in and unplug your cell phone.

You might slip a nightlight in, too. You can plug it into the outlet strip or in the bathroom to help everyone find their way to the potty in the middle of the night.

You're likely to encounter people in Chicago asking for money. I know I did the last time I went to NC. I always hesitate to give cash, since I don't know how it will be used. I do like to help people, though. Someone gave me a great idea. I take fast food gift certificates with me. There are fast food places everywhere downtown. I can give, knowing it can only be used for food. Plus, I can determine a specific amount before I leave for Chicago. I can give a few of dollars' worth to each one. Once I'm out of certificates, I've given the amount I set aside for those donations.

Travel can cause, um, digestive issues. While at NC, it would be easy to eat too little fiber and drink too little water. Plan ahead. Take some high-fiber snacks with you. Dried fruit, snack bars, and the like are portable and tasty. Make a conscious effort to drink lots of water. If you're picky about your water, take some of your favorite with you. Otherwise, just take along a refillable sport bottle. There are conveniently placed pitchers of water at each workshop. You'll feel better if you’re well hydrated.

I did a lot of research and sought out information wherever I could think to look. Since then I've added a few tips here and there, but mostly I just cut and paste the tips from a file I created after that first year.

What to pack? Make a plan. You'll need business casual clothing with comfortable shoes for three days of workshops/sessions. You'll need one outfit for your executive banquet. Check with your director to find out what type of dress is expected for yours. You’ll also need toiletries, a pen or two, and paper (note pad, loose paper, whatever you feel comfortable taking notes on).

Okay, so now that you know what type of clothes you'll need, make your plan. Plan out each outfit down to the jewelry you'll wear. Can you wear the same shoes* for more than one of your outfits? How about the same jewelry? Every decision either takes up more suitcase space or allows you more room.

*Since we do so much walking and a bit of standing, it would probably be best for your feet if you alternate shoes. Wearing the same shoes several days in a row can cause or worsen foot pain.

Today is June 1. There are only 45 days left until the start of Wave 3!

The following was originally shared by ChefAnn. Some of these we have no control over for NC (like planning too much in one day). Not every one applies directly to NC. Still, they’re good general travel tips.

8 mistakes that can spoil any trip
________________________________________

1. Winging it. Know where you're going to stay for at least the first night, especially after a long flight.

2. Packing too much. Limit yourself to one suitcase and one carry-on. Put a change of clothes and your daily medication in the carry-on in case your luggage gets lost.

3. Forgetting essential items. Make a list of things you frequently forget and put it in your empty suitcase.

4. Trying to do too much. Limit the number of activities you plan into each day. Schedule free days for long trips.

5. Trying to get too much work done at the last minute. Spread things out. You'll never have enough time to finish everything the day before you leave.

6. Calling the office too much. This can be a sign of insecurity or trying too hard to control everything. Your boss and co-workers know how to reach you in an emergency, right?

7. Misplacing essential items. Keep boarding passes, identification, passports, trip itineraries, and other documents in one small, easy-to-get-to pouch or bag. Put a bright sticker or ribbon on your luggage to make it stand out.

8. Leaving town without making arrangements to have the mail and newspaper picked up - a sure sign to would-be thieves that your house is empty.

Traveling by air? Photograph your luggage and its contents just before you leave. If it gets lost, you'll have a record for the airline. (And, just being prepared often wards off this type of bad luck. You know, it’s the same principle as carrying an umbrella so that it won't rain.)

Traveling by plane? Squeeze the air out of your toiletry bottles before packing them in your luggage. It lessens the likelihood of them exploding because of air pressure changes.

Once you get to your hotel room, I know you'll be excited to talk with everyone and get started on the NC fun. Your stay will go much smoother, though, if you take just a few minutes to familiarize yourself with your surroundings. Where are the light switches, and which lights do they control? Where are the AC controls, and how do they work? Where is the emergency exit in relation to your room?

Oh, yeah, and from personal experience, make sure the room's clock radio isn't set to full volume on a mariachi station unless that's really how the people in your room prefer to be awakened.

Traveling by bus? Check to make sure what their boarding procedures are. On many lines there aren't assigned seats, and they tend to overbook. It may be necessary for you to line up for departure as much as an hour before your departure time. You don't want to delay your arrival because you didn't get a seat. Heck, you could miss out on meeting some of your fellow Cheffers.

While you're in Chicago, be sure to carry your hotel's address with you. After all, there is more than one Sheraton or Hilton. And, while PC is very important, not every cab driver will know where we're staying. This is important whether you’re planning to take a cab or not. Things happen. It’s better to be safe. I simply print the info on a small piece of paper and tuck it in my wallet.

Once you've arrived at your hotel room, unpack. I know it's tempting to drop your bags and run out to meet all the other consultants and, especially, the other Cheffers. However, if you'll take just a few minutes to hang up your clothes, put your toiletries in the bathroom, etc., you'll save yourself time in the long run. Plus, if you're sharing the room, and you're the first one to arrive, you get to stake out prime real estate for yourself.

Oh my gosh! That is just coming up fast!!

Few additional travel tips- take some sanitizing wipes to wipe down a few commonly overlooked items in your room- the TV Remote, switches, Telephone, etc. Don't want to end your trip with a nasty germ from the room! We can only do so much, but every little bit helps. Also- find out from your hotel staff what the Cab Telephone # is- so you can program it into your cell phone- JUST IN CASE! You don't want to be stuck somewhere and have no way to call a cab....probably not likely- but you never know. Carry a small map of the city with you at all times. Find out if you can get one from the hotel, or just go online. A great travel site I use for Chicago-related info: Chicago Traveler (http://www.chicagotraveler.com/)

Okay I'm interested in finding a room for conference 3 - I plan to arrive on Thursday morning and will be leaving after conference on Saturday or maybe Sunday morning. I would love to share a room and would even consider splitting a room with one other person instead of three or four in a room. Thanks.

If you can't find a conference hotel room, there are a few others (and sometimes cheaper) and close like the one our cluster is staying at. We are at The Essex which is across the street from the Chicago Hilton. The shuttle busses park between the two hotels.

Whether you're traveling by plane, bus, or train, be sure to have your identification handy. Depending on your mode of travel, you may need to show that ID several times. You may need more than one form of ID. You will probably also need ID handy in order to check in at the hotel.

You might want to check with the hotel (or others who have stayed at your hotel in the past) to see what amenities they offer. Some offer a hair dryer, an iron and ironing board, etc. If you're not picky about those things, you could leave yours at home. That will give you more suitcase room for your shopping spoils.

Cool tips... hmm...

Make sure you check your airline's rules and costs for checking baggage. You don't want to get caught at the airport with an extra charge you forgot about. And try to minimize the amount of things you bring with you, try to fit it into a carry on. It'll save money, and save time at the airport by not having to wait by the baggage carousel.

raebates

Only 1 month, people!

Think about the toiletries you're going to bring. It can be a good investment to pick up a travel kit. You can get them fairly inexpensively ($5 to $15) at discount stores. They save space and time, since you can move everything into and out of the bathroom easily. Mine will even hang on the towel rod or the hook on the back of the bathroom door, saving precious counter space. An additional perk to these is that I can leave mine packed. The only thing I have to add is my makeup, so I’m ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Want to make things easier on yourself while you're trying to get ready in the morning at NC? Pack your clothes in "outfits." Fold all of the clothes (slacks/skirt, top, undies, etc.) that you're planning to wear on a particular day together. Need to hang things up when you arrive? Put everything for that day on the same hanger--underthings and all. No rummaging through your suitcase when it's your turn in the bathroom.

Remember that, when you're ready to come home, a bag of wadded up dirty laundry takes up more room than neatly folded laundry. I know it sounds weird, but fold your dirty laundry before you put it in your laundry bag. It will make it easier to get that bag zipped before you leave.

Remember to pack tightly. Packing loosely wastes precious space and encourages your clothes to wrinkle. If you’re trying to leave room for things you’ll want to bring home, fill a few large zippered bags with air to take up room. The bags will fold flat when you are ready to travel home. You could even put a few of your purchases in them.

While you're checking all of your clothing to make sure it's clean and in good repair, why not see if you can eliminate an item or two. Instead of bringing different shoes for each and every outfit, can you get buy with just a couple of changes? If you're bringing sweaters or jackets in case the rooms are chilly, do you have one that will work for all three days? Remember, the less you take with you, the more room you'll have to bring stuff back.

Wrinkle Release is made by Downy. Once you've decided you like it, you can make your own. Mix 1 part Downy softener with 3 parts water. Put that in the Wrinkle Release bottle, shake, and use as directed. Works well.

The Oxy spray is a little harder to find, but it's worth the search. Sometimes I can find it at Wal-Mart, sometimes at Target, and rarely at Kroger.

LOL. I would be very scared for you (or anyone else) that would be related to me! I need to try that Oxy stuff. Love the Tide stick and started with it a couple of years ago when my parents traveled to Italy and someone turned my mom onto it. Have 3 of them in multiple places for easy access. Another packing tip that I learned from the travel channel years ago is to roll your clothes rather than fold them (especially if you don't plan on hanging them up). You won't get "fold" marks. Also, usually most of us are 4-1 room at NC, suggest bringing a couple of extra hangers (especially some with clothes hooks). Another tip is that the wrinkle reducer will help get rid of "hanger nipples". Spray, rub, no more nipples!

I've been talking about making packing lists. I'm a natural-born list maker. I love lists. I keep my packing lists for recurring travel (like regional training and NC) on my computer. All I have to do when I start planning for, say, NC, is to update my list. I even have it color coded for things that I always have to take (like a toothbrush) and things that change (like specific clothing). I do realize that I'm not normal.

Just today, thanks to one of the Kim Kommando newsletters, I discovered a cool site for those who find list making a bit daunting. It's Packwhiz.com - Packing list generator (http://www.packwhiz.com). It asks a few general questions. You can start from scratch (not recommended for non-listers) or generate a basic list. You can add, delete, and rearrange the items on the list. It even has a section for things to do before you leave. It's very user friendly.

Today is June 29. There are only 17 days left until the start of Wave 3!

Here’s a great idea from Julie Ann Jones that I’ve used before. Take three index cards with you to each workshop. Label one “Wow! Do it now!” for things you can implement immediately. Label the second “Great idea! Do it soon,” for those ideas that will need a little planning and/or research before your start them. Label the third “Think about this.” That third card is for things that you think you’d like to do but will require a lot of planning or re-adjustment to your current way of doing things. When you’re sitting in a workshop and they give you a great idea, write it down on the appropriate card. This will make it easier to implement the ideas once you get back home.

Remember, no matter how great the training if you don’t implement the ideas, you’ve wasted time and money.

Even with comfortable shoes, I have found that it is sometimes better to have a different pair for each day. When you are on your feet walking around alot it takes it's toll on your feet. Changing the support daily helps my feet not feel so fatigued. Just my thought on the matter. I know it takes up space when traveling so for 3 days I only take 2 pairs and switch off.

Don’t forget to bring along a bit of cash for tipping. You’ll want to make sure you have plenty of singles. And, remember to tip your hotel maid. Generally speaking, a dollar a day per person is considered standard.

I used to just leave one tip at the end of my stay. I don’t do that anymore. Someone pointed out to me that hotel staff assignments can change daily. The person who took care of your room on the first night may not be the same as the last night. I now take envelopes for each morning labeled “Housekeeping.” I leave my tip inside (along with those of my roommates) and leave the envelope on the bathroom counter where they’ll be sure to find it.

For those of you that pack quite a bit and/or buy lots of goodies while at conference, I send home a box of things I don't feel like packing on the plane going home at the Fed Ex booth. It made the trip home easier and they charge it to your future commisions so there's nothing out of pocket.

Today is July 2. There are only 14 days left until the start of Wave 3! Two weeks, people!

Take just a moment or two to think about your goal for yourself at NC. What do you hope to get out of it? Fun is fun, and I’m looking forward to lots of fun and foolishness. It’s important to remember, though, that the real purpose of NC is to learn from the workshops and from each other. Be prepared to meet your NC goals.

Think about what you want to learn. Here’s an exercise that some coaches use. Look around your office. Now close your eyes and think of everything you saw that was green. Okay, now look around your office and notice everything that’s green. I’d just about guarantee that you noticed more green things when you were looking for them. Knowing what you hope to learn helps you to notice it when it’s presented.

I plan to write down a few questions for each workshop. I’ll look these over before the workshop starts so I’ll remember what I hope to learn. It will also help when they ask for questions at the end of the workshop, in case one of mine is still unanswered.

Write down some questions and go over them a time or two so you’re ready to ask them of the people who’ve achieved the level to which you’re aspiring.

Think about what you do well and what changes you’ve made in the last year that have helped you. This will help you to have an answer ready when someone turns to you for advice.

I know that I keep harping on the “pack light” thing. Now I’m going to tell you to bring something extra—a small first aid kit. A blister, a headache, or an upset tummy can really make it difficult to enjoy NC. If possible, make it something small you can carry with you during the day. A few Band-Aids, some aspirin, and some tummy tablets will fit in a small zippered bag and are well worth the space they take up.

Be sure to wear comfy shoes when you travel to and from NC. Flying? In many places ALL footwear must be removed for x-ray screening. Shoes that slip off and on easily will save time and frustration. Well, at least some of the frustration.

Another tip that may be TMI for some...

If you are going to Fly and wear an Underwire bra be prepared to set off an alarm going thru security. You may want to choose a non wired undergarment...

Today is July 7. There are only 9 days left until the start of Wave 3!

You will have an opportunity to meet and learn from lots of people at NC. DO NOT spend all of your time with your clustermates. You already know a lot of what they have to tell you. I realize that most people are a little more reserved than I. (Everyone who has ever met me has just fallen off their chairs, laughing.) Using the buddy system is fine. But, make sure that you’re surrounded by people you don’t know. Engage them in conversation. Go armed with the questions you want the answers to. (What is your best advice for getting bookings? If you were to name the most important thing you do in order to get recruits, what would it be?) Who knows, you just might make a new friend.

At my first conference 2 years ago I went with a group, but when we got to the McCormick Center, the rest of them went off to do Director classes and meals so I never saw them. Everyone I saw and talked to was a stranger. I realized soon that it actually was an advantage to me.

Only one week! Don’t forget to take address labels with you. Some speakers will have handouts. Sometimes they run low. That way you can just write on the back what you want them to send.

Ok, so I've been off of this site for a few days and am not sure if Rae has gotten to this tip yet or not, but since the cost of those traveling by air keep going up I thought I would throw in a tip. First, I'm assuming they are still having "surprise boxes" at conference. For those newbies, those are different priced boxes packed with discontinued merchandise with double the value. Since they give us a conference bag, plus paperwork plus merrill merchandise to purchase plus paperwork to purchase (you get the idea), there's a lot of "extras" to carry. Open up your surprise boxes, decide what you're keeping and what you're trading, put in your "extra" purchases and items into the box before you bring it to the FedEx counter to have it shipped home. It's a lot cheaper than paying for an extra heavy bag at the airport:)

When did you sign up for conference? I paid for mine w/ Conference Club - it was taken out in Apr when I registered for conference. Then, in May, I was reimbursed $100 for the Apr. Conf. promo.

You will get detailed info on all activities in your conference packet when you register once you get there.

Hi everyone--

Can't wait for next week! I keep going back and forth over wanting to read spoilers and wanting to wait and be surprised :)

Last year was my first time at NC, and I met JanetUpNorth (sp?) on the bus to the Home Office Tour (Janet, it's ok if you don't remember, lol). I am taking the first tour again this year and decided to get in the BACK of the line! Last year, they picked one winner from each bus, and the last bus had the fewest people on it, so better odds, right?? ;)

I was also so bummed that I waited too long last year to hit Merrill, and by the time I did, there was very little selection left. There were these super cute tote bags (diaper bags maybe?) that were brown and pink...they might have only been in the Director's store...anyone remember? Well the booth opens at 6:30 on Day 1, so you can guess where I'll be!

A resounding "ditto" to whoever mentioned shipping your Surprise Box home--I volunteered to lug 5 of them to my car in McCormick Place. More hassle than the cost to ship!!

Also, as a local Chicagolander, I can tell you the weather this summer has been WEIRD. Like a month behind schedule. We are having June weather now, and next week looks like more of the same--partly sunny and low 80's for Wave 3. Bring an umbrella, and "if you ain't made of sugar, you won't melt in a little rain" as my great aunt used to say :)

Really concerned because my leg (very bad torn muscle) is healing slower than I expected. (damn old age crap). I am really afraid that I am going to over do it. Will be going to the McCormick Place floor plans to see where the elevators are.

If you haven’t already, start packing now. It will give you time to remember the little things that may have slipped your mind. Don’t pack right into your suitcase, though. Lay everything out so you can see it. This way you’ll be less likely to over pack.

Decide, then, how you’ll pack. Rolling clothes is popular. I prefer stacking everything with plastic in between (bags work well and can be used later) and folding it gently together.

I'm such a "fly by the seat of my pants" person...I'll probably be packing Wednesday night after I put DS to bed.

Hi All....I just thought of something I think I am going to bring along. Maybe this goes without saying but I am going to bring along my PC calendar. So that in the evening I can take those DO IT NOW notecards and put them on my calendar---I'm less likely to let things go if it is written in black and white on my calendar! LOL.

So excited to meet everyone!

Thanks to Rae I went shopping yesterday and packed up some things I might have never thought of...tummy pills, wrinkle things, zip lock bags, etc! I will try to start getting organized today...we are flying out on Wednesday! However, I may have to run to the doc today...not sure if its my son's fifth disease or what but I've got a raised rash that's itchy and today all my joints are killing me! I can barely walk!

I'm going to the doc today but if its the Fifth's Disease I'm not contagious! Also, as long as no one smooches me on the lips they should be fine! :blushing:

There are "air hugs" too...my son gives them all the time! He yells air hug and hugs himself...it's like blowing you a kiss. :D

Today is July 14. There are only 2 days left until the start of Wave 3!

Don’t obsess too much about what you might have forgotten to pack. You’ll be in Chicago. There’s little you could have forgotten that can’t be purchased easily near where you’re staying.

Less than 365 days left until the start of your next National Conference!

Seriously, you know the time will fly by.

Here's what I do. First I type up my notes from the workshops. I take note in a weird shorthand that makes sense while I can still remember everything but is complete gibberish six months later. Typing them up also helps to set the ideas in my head.

Second, I think about what could have gone better. Was there something I forgot? Was there a place I meant to go? Did someone suggest something about a way to pack that I found brilliant?

Now is the time to write those things down. You think you'll remember, but you won't. Well, you'll probably remember when you get to NC next year and someone says that they always (or have started) . . . whatever. But, that's not really going to help much. Is it?

I have already started a file for NC 2010 on my computer. One of the few things in there is a file titled, "Remember To." That's where I put my notes. If you do this, too, you'll be really glad next year when you start to get ready.

BTW, one of my suggestions is always to tip the housekeeping staff nightly. We came back after the room had been straightened from that first night and found a very sweet thank you note from our housekeeper. It even had a smiley face drawn on it. It was good to know we'd brightened someone's day, and we know the resulting note brightened ours.
