I got 2 round stones off Freecycle yesterday. They have many marks on them that look like they are from being stored too close to something metal - know what I"m talking about? anyway, wondering if anyone knows how to get these off. I tried the baking soda paste and it didn't make one bit of difference. I'm saving these for my oldest when she graduates and gets her own apartment. :) TIA!

Those marks do not effect performance so I wouldn't worry about them. They'll eventually fade as the stone gets used.

Hi there! Congrats on snagging those round stones from Freecycle - what a great find! I definitely know what you're talking about with those marks from being stored near metal. I've found that a mixture of white vinegar and water can do wonders for removing those stubborn marks. Just mix equal parts vinegar and water and use a soft cloth to gently rub the mixture onto the marks. Let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it off and repeating if necessary. The acidity in the vinegar helps to break down the marks and leave your stones looking good as new. Hope this helps and good luck with your future pampered chef endeavors!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are some effective methods for removing rust marks from stones?

There are several methods to remove rust marks from stones. You can use a mixture of baking soda and water to create a paste, apply it to the rust stains, and scrub gently with a soft brush. Another option is to use white vinegar or lemon juice, which can help dissolve rust. For tougher stains, consider using a commercial rust remover specifically designed for stone surfaces.

2. Is it safe to use bleach on stones to remove rust marks?

Using bleach on stones is generally not recommended, as it can damage the stone's surface and alter its color. Instead, opt for gentler cleaning solutions like vinegar or baking soda, which are less likely to harm the stone.

3. Can I use a pressure washer to clean rust marks off stones?

While a pressure washer can be effective for cleaning outdoor stones, it may not be the best choice for rust removal. High pressure can damage the stone surface, especially if it's porous. It's better to use manual cleaning methods to avoid any potential harm.

4. How can I prevent rust marks from forming on my stone surfaces?

To prevent rust marks on stone surfaces, ensure proper drainage to avoid water pooling, which can lead to rust stains. Regularly clean the stones and seal them with a stone sealer to protect against stains and moisture. Additionally, avoid placing metal objects directly on stone surfaces.

5. Are there any specific products recommended for rust removal on stones?

Yes, there are several products designed specifically for rust removal on stone surfaces. Look for rust removers that are safe for use on natural stone, such as those containing oxalic acid or phosphoric acid. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and test the product on a small, inconspicuous area first.
