Does anyone have a recipe for healthy trail mix? I want to try it out at my kids cooking show this weekend. Thanks!!

Try one of these... hope they help! :)

Trail Mix Recipe courtesy Alton Brown, 2007
Show: Good Eats
Episode: Whithering Bites

7 ounces dried fruit, approximately 3 cups
5 ounces mixed nuts, approximately 1 cup
3 1/2 ounces granola, approximately 1 cup

Combine the fruit, nuts and granola in a large bowl. To store trail mix, place in an airtight glass container. Keep container in a cool dry place for up to 1 month.
Cook's Note: Fruit dried at home should be pliable, but not sticky and you should not be able to squeeze moisture from it. If the mixture becomes soft overnight, your fruit is not dry enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ingredients can I include in a healthy trail mix for kids?

You can include a variety of ingredients such as nuts (like almonds or walnuts), seeds (like pumpkin or sunflower seeds), dried fruits (like raisins or cranberries), whole grain cereals, and a small amount of dark chocolate or yogurt-covered treats for sweetness. Make sure to consider any allergies your kids may have when selecting ingredients.

How can I make trail mix more appealing to kids?

To make trail mix more appealing, try using colorful ingredients like dried fruit and colorful cereals. You can also involve your kids in the process by letting them choose their favorite ingredients or create fun names for the mix. Presenting it in fun containers or using themed packaging can also make it more exciting.

Can I customize the trail mix recipe based on dietary restrictions?

Absolutely! You can customize the trail mix to accommodate dietary restrictions. For example, if someone has a nut allergy, you can use seeds or whole grain snacks instead of nuts. For gluten-free diets, ensure that all cereals and ingredients are certified gluten-free. Always read labels to ensure compliance with dietary needs.

How should I store homemade trail mix?

Homemade trail mix should be stored in an airtight container to keep it fresh. You can keep it at room temperature for a few weeks, or store it in the refrigerator for longer shelf life. If you make a large batch, consider portioning it into smaller bags for easy grab-and-go snacks.

Is trail mix a healthy snack option for kids?

Yes, trail mix can be a healthy snack option for kids when made with wholesome ingredients. It provides a good balance of protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates, which can help keep kids energized and satisfied. Just be mindful of portion sizes, as trail mix can be calorie-dense, especially with added sweets.
