Cook Wild Rice in Rice Cooker Plus: A Recipe to Wow the Hard-to-Please!

Inn Long Grain and Wild Rice, Chicken Rice, and other flavors and cook as per directions and it comes out perfect every time. The package directions are 4 minutes on high and 8 - 10 minutes at 50% power. Remove from microwave; let stand 5 minutes or until water is absorbed

I got an e-mail from a customer asking me to tell her in simple terms how to cook wild rice in the rice cooker plus. Anyone have a recipe that will wow this her (as she can be somewhat hard to please)?

Here is the answer the home office sent:
Thank you for contacting The Pampered Chef! Wild rice is unfortunately a
tricky on in the rice cooker plus because it just takes way too long to
cook. I cannot give any direction on it. Honestly, my best advice for
wild rice is to soak it in water 1 day ahead of time then cook on the
stove either in chicken broth or some lightly salted water. The rice
cooker plus I fear would do a disservice to wild rice. Remember though
that wild rice is not rice at all. It's actually a "grass"...who knew,
right? That's why it doesn't cook the same as most rices. I hope this
information is useful. Take care!

Thanks for sharing! I just got my Rice Cooker this week.
I think Damien's response is great. He seems very down-to-earth. It's like he's chatting with a friend in his response to you.Cool. :)

DO NOT LET HER DO IT AT ALL IN THE RICE COOKER! I had a customer who tried it and she did not ask for any advice. She just figured no problem. It was. Because it took so long to cook, per the microwave instructions on the box, she melted the bottom of the cooker and no, PC would not replace it. The Rice cookers are made to be used at high temps for more than 10 minutes or so. If you try to cook broccoli in them, that too will burn before it is cooked.

The Use & Care card actually says to use only rice that has microwave directions. I would venture a guess that Wild Rice does not have those directions.

Good to know. Thanks. I'll be sharing that with my team.

Anything else you can cook in the Rice Cooker PLUS...I'm getting one soon and want to promote it at my shows. What's the PLUS for...if you have any recipes or ideas, please post. Thanks!

I was curious to see if anyone else had any problems with wild rice in the rice cooker plus. I actually used a wild rice and long grain mix and decided to see if it came out okay in the rice cooker. I burned the bottom of it. The package came with microwave directions - 3 min on high and 22 minutes on 50% power. I actually stopped it at 10 to check it and it seemed to be okay. I turned around a few minutes later and it was burning. Oh well, at least I know not to recommend it.

Sorry you had this experience. I use Uncle Ben's Country Inn Long Grain and Wild Rice, Chicken Rice, and other flavors and cook as per directions and it comes out perfect every time. The package directions are 4 minutes on high and 8 - 10 minutes at 50% power. Remove from microwave; let stand 5 minutes or until water is absorbed.

Most of these recipes are not for the rice cooker plus. Many are for the micro cookers and some don't appear to even be related to the key words in the search. lol

I have cooked wild rice (regular not a white rice mix) in my rice cooker plus many times and it has turned out great. I cook it on high for 10 minutes - then on 50% power. I start at 20 minutes, and keep adding time until it is done. [It has taken up to 45 min to an hour on 50 % power. No time saving from cooking on the stovetop.
It depends on how long I have soaked it prior to cooking. I have cooked it by just rinsing first and not soaking, although you should soak it to help loosen the outer shell.

1. How much wild rice should I use in the Rice Cooker Plus?

For a standard-sized Rice Cooker Plus, we recommend using 1 cup of uncooked wild rice. This will yield approximately 3 cups of cooked rice.

2. Can I add other ingredients to the wild rice in the Rice Cooker Plus?

Absolutely! The Rice Cooker Plus is perfect for one-pot meals. You can add vegetables, meats, and seasonings to the wild rice for a complete and flavorful dish.

3. How long does it take to cook wild rice in the Rice Cooker Plus?

Cooking time can vary depending on the type and amount of rice used, but on average, it takes about 20-25 minutes for wild rice to cook in the Rice Cooker Plus.

4. Do I need to rinse the wild rice before cooking it in the Rice Cooker Plus?

Yes, we recommend rinsing the wild rice before cooking to remove any excess starch and impurities. Simply place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until it runs clear.

5. Can I use the Rice Cooker Plus to keep the wild rice warm after cooking?

Yes, the Rice Cooker Plus has a warm setting that will keep your wild rice at a safe and delicious temperature until you are ready to serve. Simply switch the setting to warm after the cooking cycle is complete.
