theAnnual Beloit College Mindset List

In summary, the list for the class of 2012 includes cultural touchstones such as Harry Potter, karaoke machines, GPS satellite navigation, and social media. Additionally, the list discusses topics such as rising fuel costs, the Big Three car companies, and the Bush presidency. The mindset of this new generation of college students is quite different from that of the faculty about to prepare them.

Every year, Beloit College publishes a list of truths about the class entering their freshman year this Fall. The list always serves to amuse, but it also serves to make some of us feel very old, and for some of us to feel like elder statesmen. Follow this http://www.beloit.edu/mindset/2012.php. Here's the list for the class of 2012:
====================================================

This month, almost 2 million first-year students will head off to college campuses around the country. Most of them will be about 18 years old, born in 1990 when headlines sounded oddly familiar to those of today: Rising fuel costs were causing airlines to cut staff and flight schedules; Big Three car companies were facing declining sales and profits; and a president named Bush was increasing the number of troops in the Middle East in the hopes of securing peace. However, the mindset of this new generation of college students is quite different from that of the faculty about to prepare them to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Each August for the past 11 years, Beloit College in Beloit, Wis., has released the Beloit College Mindset List. It provides a look at the cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college. It is the creation of Beloit’s Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride and Public Affairs Director Ron Nief. The List is shared with faculty and with thousands who request it each year as the school year begins, as a reminder of the rapidly changing frame of reference for this new generation.

The class of 2012 has grown up in an era where computers and rapid communication are the norm, and colleges no longer trumpet the fact that residence halls are “wired” and equipped with the latest hardware. These students will hardly recognize the availability of telephones in their rooms since they have seldom utilized landlines during their adolescence. They will continue to live on their cell phones and communicate via texting. Roommates, few of whom have ever shared a bedroom, have already checked out each other on Facebook where they have shared their most personal thoughts with the whole world.

It is a multicultural, politically correct and “green” generation that has hardly noticed the threats to their privacy and has never feared the Russians and the Warsaw Pact.

Students entering college for the first time this fall were generally born in 1990.

For these students, Sammy Davis Jr., Jim Henson, Ryan White, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Freddy Krueger have always been dead.

1. Harry Potter could be a classmate, playing on their Quidditch team.

Very interesting and thank you...although my son was born in 1990 and this further helps me understand him. I do, however, have a long way to go!!!

And remember, these are our future consultants. :)
(I'm hoping to get one who can demystify for me all the capabilities of P3 and cluster reports)

I'm still struggling with the fact that I am old enough to be their mother and they are starting COLLEGE!!!!

If you want to really bamboozle him, set up a turntable, put an album on it and ask him to play cut 3.

Dumb kids.

You know, I get the reason for having a list, but I went back and looked at the list for my year (the first year they had; I was c/o 2002, but I graduated a year early), and most of the list is wrong! We didn't have an answering machine or cable until I went to college; of course I could remember Ronald Regan as president, and I may not remember hearing it, but I knew he was shot (and that it was to impress Jodie Foster); I remember the Challenger - we were watching it in school...I could go on and on.Reading this year's list made me feel like an old fogey, but seeing how out of touch "my year's" list was made me realize I am not at all an old fogey. Just a regular fogey.

It's even funnier to see them play with 8-tracks! Most don't even know what a cassette is now!

I have a friend who is a preschool director/teacher. She uses LPs for some of her class activities. The kids refer to them as "the big CDs."My DS, though, who is only 22, knows how to play an LP. He got into our old 70s music when he was in high school. It was fun to see him and his friends sitting on the couch rocking out to Queen, Foreigner, and The Bee Gees. :)

Another one bites the dust...:sing:

Funny thing is the group is total opposite of my value scale, but I still like their songs...

I thought this list was really cool!! Thanks for sharing KG!!!

Too cool - thanks for sharing!

I like how kids pick up not only what's popular, but also what their parents listen to. I grew up with classical, jazz, and even sitar music (Beatles influenced Dad); 11-year old DS bypasses that to load up the IPod with my Queen, Peter Gabriel, club music, Van Halen, and Green Day. He'll pick up AC DC from his dad.

I am in the middle of training orientation leaders right now and we just talked about this today with them as we talked about the statistics of the students coming in. It definitely is crazy to read the list. This is also the last class to be born in the '80s.

You and me, both. LOL! They were truly talented, though, and I will always respect talent.
