Understanding Shipping Taxes and How They are Calculated

In summary, the tax rate for shipping charges is determined by the destination of the product and may still apply even if you live in a different state than the company. There may be exceptions to being taxed on shipping, such as for tax-exempt organizations or international shipments. Shipping charges are usually included in the total taxable amount, but it is best to check with your state's tax laws for confirmation. You can also check your order confirmation or invoice, or contact customer service for further clarification on whether taxes were applied to shipping charges.

Is this correct? I thought tax was figured out before shipping, but upon paying closer attention and people from the catalog shows figuring out their own total, they are being taxed after shipping - not products, then add shipping?

It depends on your state. Some have shipping taxed and others don't.

It depends on how your state defines shipping and handling charges.

The only states where sales tax is not charged on shipping is...
AK, DC, DE, IA, ID, IL, MA, MT, NH, OH, OK, OR, UT, and WY

All others must have tax charged on shipping and handling.

Okie dokie - I must have missed that, thanks for your help!

Hi there! I just wanted to clarify that tax is typically calculated based on the total cost of the products, including shipping. So it's possible that some customers may see a tax charge after shipping, but it should still be based on the total cost of their order. If you have any further questions about taxes and shipping, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for being a valued customer!
