Non-Porous Stoneware: Why Does Oil & Soap Stick?

In summary, stoneware is non-porous but still has some absorption, so it is important to properly season it before use. Dishwashers can strip away the seasoning layer and cause odors and flavors to linger, so hand washing is recommended.

Hi... I'm a little confused about the stoneware. It says they are non-porous, so how does the oil stick to it for seasoning the stone, and also why does the soap taste stay with the stone if you put it in the dishwasher? Those 2 things are a contradiction. It clearly says that oils and odors won't stick to it, but obviously they do. Anyone? Thanks.

They're porous enough for steam to pass through, but not porous enough that they absorb oils. The seasoning bakes onto the surface, which very rough. The oils in soaps can attach themselves to the layer of seasoning.

The non-porous nature of stoneware means that it has a very low absorption rate, so oils and odors won't stick to it as easily as they would to other materials. However, stoneware is still porous to some degree, so it can absorb some oils and odors over time. This is why it is important to properly season stoneware before use, to create a protective layer on the surface that helps prevent absorption. As for the soap taste staying with the stone after being washed in the dishwasher, this could be due to a few factors. First, the high heat and harsh detergents used in dishwashers can strip away the protective seasoning layer on stoneware, making it more susceptible to absorbing flavors and odors. Additionally, if the stoneware is not properly dried after washing, it can trap moisture and lead to the growth of bacteria that can cause odors and flavors to linger. To avoid this issue, it is best to hand wash stoneware with mild soap and warm water, and to dry it thoroughly before storing or using it again. If you do choose to wash stoneware in the dishwasher, make sure to use a gentle cycle and avoid harsh detergents. It is also a good idea to re-season the stoneware after washing to maintain its non-stick properties.

1. Why does oil stick to non-porous stoneware?

Non-porous stoneware is designed to be extremely smooth and dense, which means that there are no tiny pores or holes for the oil to seep into. This makes it more likely for the oil to remain on the surface instead of being absorbed, causing it to stick.

2. Is there a way to prevent oil from sticking to non-porous stoneware?

Yes, there are a few things you can do to prevent oil from sticking. First, make sure to properly season your stoneware before use. This creates a natural non-stick surface. You can also try using less oil when cooking or using cooking sprays specifically designed for stoneware.

3. Can soap stick to non-porous stoneware as well?

Yes, soap can also stick to non-porous stoneware. This is because the soap can interact with any oil residue left on the surface, causing it to stick. It's important to thoroughly clean and dry your stoneware after each use to prevent this from happening.

4. Why does soap stick to stoneware but not other surfaces?

Stoneware is a very porous material, which means it has tiny holes and spaces in the surface that can trap and hold onto soap residue. Other surfaces, such as glass or metal, do not have as many pores and are less likely to hold onto soap.

5. How do I clean non-porous stoneware to prevent oil and soap sticking?

The best way to clean non-porous stoneware is to use a mild dish soap and a non-abrasive sponge or brush. Rinse thoroughly with hot water and dry with a soft cloth. You can also use a stoneware cleaner specifically designed for this type of cookware. Regular cleaning and proper seasoning will help prevent oil and soap from sticking in the future.
