Is a Popping Sound from Stoneware Normal or a Sign of Damage?

In summary, stoneware is a type of ceramic material used for cooking and baking that can make a popping sound when heated in the oven due to the moisture in the material. This is a normal occurrence and does not affect the performance of the stoneware. The popping sound does not cause stoneware to crack and to prevent it, you can preheat the stoneware before use. Despite the popping sound, stoneware is safe to use and designed to withstand high temperatures.

Hi! I have a customer that purchased the square stonewared baker last May. She just contacted me through my newsletter. She stated that she was pouring boiling water in it to clean it, and it made a popping sound and she could hear a kind of hissing. She can't find a crack in it, but is afraid to use it. She is asking what to do. Is there an explainable reason for this...or is it a sign that it's about to crack?? I swear I read someone's post about this...and can't find it. I apologize if I'm repeating a recent question!!!! Thank you for your help! I get so many good ideas here!!! :D

Why the hell, I mean heck, is she pour boiling water in her stone?! I'm sure she broke it, but the crack hasn't revealed itself yet. She thermoshocked it. You can't pour boiling water in a stone.

Yes, after the stone is cooled down she should clean it with "hot" water, not boiling.
