Maximize Your Facebook Experience: A Beginner's Guide to Using Your New Account

In summary, the conversation is about using Facebook and its various features. The speakers discuss how they signed up for an account and what they use it for, including finding old classmates and connecting with friends. They also mention some issues they've had with the platform, such as incorrect information being displayed and difficulty navigating the new version. Some speakers also share their usernames on Facebook and invite others to connect with them on the platform.

So I signed up for an account. Now what do I do with this? I always hear people talking about being on it all the time, but doing what? How do you learn about what all there is to do there?

You have to "invite" a friend to see their profile.... It is good way to catch up with old friends and to be nosey. LOL

It was designed for college friends to connect with each other.

My husband has an account b/c his mom invited him. He is a high school teacher and has hundreds of request from his students to be friends! I warned him not to sign up and now he is rethinking it! HA!

i have used it mostly to find former classmates. one even had a catalog show for me! i also signed up for a bunch of applications that i'm not using.

how come when I enter in information about my schooling and occupations it doesn't remember what I entered? I clicked on save changes, but it's all gone.

And for some reason it thinks that my phone company is my employer and I NEVER typed that in!

ETA: Okay, so I went back on and tried again, and I think it's working now.

I'm new at this, so I'm not totally sure. Was there an option to add it to your profile??

Me too! I found a couple people that are going to have shows for me. :) Of course I didn't mention PC on Facebook but once I started emailing them they saw my signature.

Okay, why on earth does it say Frontier telephone under my name!! AAAGGG!

ETA: So I'm obvious not too savvy here...I don't know why it put it that frontier was my network, but I figured out how to remove it. Thankfully. :)

It's fun to connect with old friends! I'm on there and enjoy reconnecting with people. Not too many CS people are on there- at least that I can find... :(

I'm there.... Becky Reese Gosain. :) I want to find more HS and college classmates! I'm pretty much just connected with current friends at this point.

I am on there, too. I just signed up mostly so old friends and I could find each other! One of my girlfriends that graduated with me called me a few weeks ago and told me to sign up!

If you search for me, I am under Kelly Watson McNamara. Tell me you are from Chef Success if you want to add me as a friend! I don't always recognize the names!!

I'm on there. Of course, I'm in college, so it's almost mandatory. So many of the student orgs and other groups on my campus use Facebook as there only form of communication, that it is almost impossible to stay connected without it. Post any more questions you have, and I'll try to help out. Of course, those of you just signing up now probably have the new version of Facebook. There are two versions out, and most people haven't made the switch yet. I find the layout of the new one to be much more confusing. But I just switched over yesterday, so I'm figuring it out slowly.

I'm on there.. I get questions on my default pic. I have my PC apron on.. :)

I'm on there too!!
Of course I have more friends on Myspace than Facebook, so if anyone wants to be my friend, I'm under Lisa Wilhelm or Lisa Pickler Wilhelm (not sure if I put my maiden name on there or not).

I go on Facebook to check out friends pictures, and to find out what they are up to now. I know of TONS of people who go on to play games, though.

I have gotten invitations to join reunion and facebook but always stop when it asks me to list my contacts there. I don't want them to get harassed. I think on one of them you give them permission to get contacts from your address book if I'm not mistaken.

I'm curious as to how you find people or they find you.

With facebook you shouldn't have to list contacts or anything like that. There is a search box where you can type in names of people you know. You can also search by e-mail address, hometown or school, or other information if you don't know someone's last name. All the matches found will come up and you can scroll through and find who you're looking for. Then you just hit the "Add as friend" button and it will send them a friend request. Adding friends is actually the easy part.

You learn something new every day. I thought ETA just meant "Estimated Time of Arrival." I must be old. LOL

Do it, do it!!! I've also gotten sucked into roulette (my absolute favorite casino game), but now I'm going to start using it as a reward when I spend "x" amount of time on organizing my office or making "x" phone calls!!!

I just signed up! What have a gotten myself into!! :) Good idea though to use it as a reward. It was fun to see a lot of my co-workers on there. I looked at my schools but it would be nice if you could filter by year otherwise there is too much to look through.

So can you not mention PC at all on Facebook or MySpace? Can you not even say Pampered Chef as an interest or anything? Can you blog about this wonderful kitchen company I rep for?

If anyone wants to add me, enter Paige Vallet. I am in the process of entering data and already found 2 friends from High School I haven't talked to in 20 years.

Nope, you can't make any mention of PC. The best way to do it is like you said, to talk about "a company that sells high quality kitchen tools through in-home cooking shows, etc." or some other reference that makes it obvious who it is, without actually saying it. Yes, if you search PC on either site, you will find tons of people who violate this rule, but I wouldn't risk it. HO does have people monitoring those sites, and anyone could report you at any time. It's not worth it.

Oh yes, it's not a good thing. I'm addicted. I forget how I found it, but if you go to main page, there might be a thing you can click on to go there yourself. I'm not sure. It's one of the applications.

Carla, me too!!! Although, I'm hating Bingo right now, because I haven't been winning lately.

Sadly, I'm even more addicted to PackRat, and can play that for hours (assuming, of course, I find anything worth stealing or buying).

What's your Facebook name? I'll add you as a friend. I'd tell you to find me under Sarah Rodriguez, but that wouldn't help you at all!

ETA: I just looked. There are 431 listings for Sarah Rodriguez!

I don't accept EVERYONE that requests friendship. Lots are ppl interested in Networking. If I don't really know them - i don't accept them.

look at thier friends and see if you know them though them. I hope that makes sense. My cousin sent me a friend request and I didnt recognize the name at all so I didnt confirm or ignore it. Then a few days later I went and looked again and I saw that my sister was her friend then it clicked that I did know her.

I guess he went to high school with me. He has some friends in common, but I don't know him. It says in his employment that he does insurance. Maybe he's looking for leads?

I am on Facebook and My Space. It can become a little addictive! It has been cool getting together with old classmates and funny how many I found that live near me now in North Carolina when we are all from Maine. I am still figuring out My Space.

I usually send them a message and say something like, "This may sound really stupid, but can you tell me how you know me?" They can just take it like I'm old and forgetful. I've been out of high school for 14 years and went to 2 different high schools, can't remember everybody!

It doesn't ask for a maiden name so how would old classmates find me? I think it would hard to find the girls unless they had a really unique name.

  • #48
I will try lookin for my name later, with a last name like Sanchez I'm sure there are a few thousands... :)

There is a way to include a maiden name. I included my maiden name in there just to cover all the bases, but it's in my full name. OR I thought there was an option to include a maiden name so it comes up on searches but isn't shown in your "real" name that's on your page.
