Cookware Mystery: Searching for a Forgotten Icecube Story

In summary, an ice cube can be used to demonstrate how quickly the temperature transfers to the sides of a pan.

Somewhere I remember reading something to do with the cookware and an icecube. Searched in files and couldn't find anything. Can someone refresh my memory what that was about?

If you put an ice cube in the pan, it will begin to melt immediately because of the heat conduction.

It's a great way to show how fast the temperature transfers to the sides of the pan.

Search for the thread "Ice Melt Trick" and another thread called "Rice Krispie Treats".

The ice cube works in all pans if they are good heat conductors. My husband and I, being the nerdy type, did an experiment with three saute pans - 1 PC and two others. It was close, but my new PC pan did melt the ice a smidgeon quicker.

I do this at every show. I put an ice cube in the saute pan and an ice cube in a prep bowl. I then talk about the saute pan as the ice cube melts and then pass the saute pan around so everyone can feel the bottom. When it gets back to me I hold up the prep bowl to show that it hasn't melted in the prep bowl and pour the melted ice into the prep to show how important the lip of the saute pan is at not making messes. People love it!

that's why you don't use it in reference to other cookware. Just use the ice to talk about OUR pans and the transfer of the temperature, etc.

I did the same comparison between our PC pan and my farberware. Farberware melted faster; pretty even on the temperature transfer though. But that's not to say I don't pull out my PC pans FIRST before ever touching my few pieces of Farberware that I have left (gave most of them to my mom).

Hi there! I think I may have the answer to your cookware mystery. The icecube trick is a great way to test the quality of your cookware. Simply place an icecube in a cold pan and turn on the heat. If the icecube melts quickly and evenly, it means your cookware has good heat distribution. If the icecube melts unevenly or takes a long time to melt, it may be a sign that your cookware is not of the best quality. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions about cookware. Happy cooking!
