Farewell, Smurf! Meet the Real Me in Vienna!

er...Papa Smurf is the only Smurf shown who does not fit the norm. He is not blue-skinned, he has a red hat, and he does not have a white tail. He is instead a light brown color. He is also the only Smurf who has a beard, which is a sign of wisdom and experience. 4) The Smurfs live in a communist society, where everything is shared equally and everyone works together. They are constantly fighting off their nemesis, Gargamel, who is portrayed as a capitalist oppressor. The Smurfs ultimately fail in their fight against capitalism, but they retain their society and are still able to live happily ever after.

Well, as you see by my avatar...I finally gave the smurf the boot! Thought some of you might want to see my face instead of the smurfs!!

This a picture of my husband and I in Vienna! Much better, but not as much fun as the smurf!!:D  :D

I'll miss him...sort of. Since the Smurfs were communists, on that basis alone, I won't miss him.

Awesome to see your little face Marlene! Thanks for sharing!!:D

It's great to see your face but I will miss the Smurf. I am a Smurf fan.

Nice to "see" ya! It's so funny...we all started with cartoon avatars, & now so many of us have pics up.....it's funny cause some people don't look like what I pictured! LOL

The Smurfs were Communists
rennea said:
Think about it. The Smurfs lived in a isolated community, a eglitariun utopia with no outside commerce. Each Smurf had a job and there were no competitors. There is no medium of exchange, everything is barter. All provided for one another ("Each accoding to his abilities, each according to his needs") and watched over one another to lookout for Gargamel. Farmer Smurf didn't sell his crop to anyone, all food production was for the mutual benefit of the commune.

And they were all watched over by a father figure who ran the whole show - no one moved without asking Premier Smur...er...Papa Smurf. Papa Smurf, with white beard and sideburns, bears an incredible resemblance to Karl Marx. Brainy Smurf plays the Trotsky role to Papa Smurf, including trying to take over when Papa Smurf is unavailable.

The smurfs wear a uniform - white pants - with accessories so the audience can tell them apart, otherwise, they are as uniformed as the Chinese Communists were for decades. They also all wear white hats, except for Papa Smurf, who wears a red hat. Need I point out that Communists always display themselves using red as their color?

It's a pure Marxist model, when you consider it.

The sturggle with Gargamel can be seen as the stuggle of Communism against Capitalism, with Azrael (Gargamel's cat) being the prolitariat tool of the capitalists. The Smurfs often tried to convert Azrael to come over and bond with them, to rise up against his oppressor. Of course, that didn't happen to the Smurfs nor to capitalism.

(Poor Smurfette - one female for A L L L L L L L L L those male Smurfs. She was created by a magic spell cast by Gargamel, she was saved by Papa Smurf casting a counter spell.)

Each Smurf has a prefix to their uniform name, Farmer Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Dreamy (Astro) Smurf, Papa Smurf - not unlike Comrade Lennon, Comrade Marx, Comrade Trotsky.

The creator of the Smurfs, an Belgian cartoonist named Peyo, denied to his death that he had created a model of Communism to indoctrinate children, but the parallels are too eerie to dismiss lightly as "...just a children's show."

Consider that syndication of The Smurfs ended at the same time the Soviet Union fell.

It's food for thought!

S.M.U.R.F actually stands for Socialist Men Under Red Father.

Food for thought, I say...

More information...THE FEIGELSONIAN THEORY OF SMURFIAN COMMUNISM IN THE POST-WAR ERA
According to the Feigelsonian Theory of Smurfian Communism in the Post-War Era, the Smurfs television show was created as part of a Soviet plot to brainwash the children of the free world, as part of the USSR long-range strategy for world domination. To wit:

1) Note that all the Smurfs look exactly the same (with the exception of Papa Smurf--see below). They are all blue-skinned and have white hats and white tails. This reflects the classless society Marxist theory proposes, in which all men and women are comrades.

2) Note which Smurfs are focused on: Hefty, the soldier and Handy, the worker. Note which Smurfs are portrayed negatively: Greedy, who simply eats all the time; Vanity, who contributes nothing to the society and is lost in his own Narcissism; and particularly Brainy (a thinly-veiled caricature of Trotsky), who thinks too much for himself and undermines the Smurf state. He is repeatedly thrown out of the colony (Trotsky, of course, was assassinated in Mexico).

3) Papa Smurf is the only Smurf who wears any clothing other than the standard-issue white uniform. Instead his outfit is RED. (Need we say more?) Furthermore, Papa Smurf's unique facial hair is clearly meant to conjure up images of Lenin and Stalin.

4) Note the prime enemy of the Smurfs: Gargamel, and his cat Asreael. There can be no doubt that this villain/sidekick duo are to represent the Jews, who were persecuted under Soviet rule.

5) You may attempt to challenge this theory with the claim that the mid-1980s introduction of the younger generation of Smurfs was an attempt at Americanization. Conversely, I submit that this addition occurred just as Perestroika and Glastnost took hold in the Soviet Union, and that openness was reflected in the addition of new characters.

Luckily, of course, the United States was able to win the Cold War, and the communist message of the Smurfs has gone by the wayside. Of particular contribution in defeating this threat were such shows as GI Joe (a real American hero, GI Joe is there) and Superfriends (a flag-waving show if ever there was one).

Well, maybe it does. The word "Smurf" originally was a translation of "Schtroumpf", an invented French nonsense word.

I have a relative who was raised on The Smurfs. Politically, she is just slightly to the right of Fidel Castro. I'm not going to say it was all The Smurf's fault (if her mother joined the DNC, it would be a major shift to the right) but I'm sure it influenced her continuing search for a utopian existance.

Hm. We weren't allowed to watch Smurfs as kids because Gargamel was a sorcerer and they're of the devil... I wonder if the communist thing was the REAL reason we weren't allowed to watch...

  • #20
Jennifer, probably without conscious realization of it. Gargamel, supposedly representing capitalism, was portrayed as an evil sorceror. Smoke and mirrors of capitalism, you know.Which, any of you who at TPC Consultants, already know what capitalism means!

Hijack? What are you talking about? We're discussing Smurfs, just what's in the title of your thread.

Now, if we were talking about whether or not the Colts can repeat, or the first exhibition baseball games played today, or what's playing at the Met this Saturday, now THAT would be a highjack!
