A little baking soda, water and elbow grease will do the trick as well. And it's cheaper.

Spices and rubs will be good up to a year. After that they no longer have a rich flavor but can still be used. (Opened or unopened) They should also be stored in a dark cabinet and away from the stove or moist areas. :D I'm kind of a spice nut.
