Can You Cook Brown Rice in a Rice Cooker?

In summary, the Rice Cooker Plus can be used to cook white and brown rice. Brown rice takes longer to cook than white rice on the stovetop or in the microwave. The Rice Cooker Plus can be used to make 2, 4, 6, or 12 servings. The Rice Cooker Plus can be set to cook on HIGH for 5 minutes, then on medium for 40 minutes. After cooking, the Rice Cooker Plus can be reduced to MEDIUM (50%) for 20 minutes and then removed from the microwave. Finally, the rice can be served fluffed with a fork.

Has anyone made this and can help me? I had a guest order it yesterday at my show but wants to know if she can do brown rice in it since that's the only kind her DH will eat. I told her I'd find out here from the experts ;) before we sent the show in.

So can she? And if so, how much at what power for how long?

Thanks! :)

Yes, you can do brown rice in it...just follow the manufacturer's microwave directions. It does take longer than white rice...about the same as it takes on stove-top.

Most people have posted 'RC recipe booklet' files on here - they have ALL the different options for using the RC. Or you can PM me and I will email them to you, Jodi.

Thanks Jenna, I have a version of those. Mine doesn't say anything about brown rice though and she specifically asked about it. I told her I'd send the ideas I had but wanted to answer her question with specific details as well such as time, temp, for what amount of rice...

I do brown rice in mine all the time. 1 cup rice
2 cups water or brothMicrowave on HIGH for 5 minutes, then on medium for 40.

This is the response I got from the PC Test Kitchen when I inquired a while back:

Thank you for contacting The Pampered Chef regarding the Rice Cooker
Plus. Brown rice naturally takes longer to cook than white rice on the
stovetop and in the microwave. Please follow directions from the package
for microwave directions. If directions are not available, we recommend
the following directions (from Uncle Ben's brown rice) as an approximate
guideline.

1. Combine rice and water in Rice Cooker Plus.

2. Cover and cook on HIGH using times below:

Servings: 2 4 6 12
Minutes: 5 8 10 15

3. Reduce to MEDIUM (50%) for 20 minutes. Remove from microwave. Let
stand covered 5 minutes or until water is absorbed. Fluff with fork.
Serve.

Note: Microwave ovens vary; cook time approximate. Directions also call
for adding butter to rice before heating. We do not recommend this.
Please only add butter after rice is finished cooking.
Measurements:

Servings (cups of cooked rice) 2 4 6 7
Rice (cups) 1 2 3
Whole Box
Water (cups) 1-1/4 2-1/4 3-1/4 3-1/2
Salt (teaspoons) 1/4 1/2 3/4

We hope this information helps! Please let the Test Kitchen know if you
have any further questions regarding this product or any other.
