Posts: 14,641 Best Show: <$1.2k Experience: 6 # of Shows: My Mood: | There were no new developments in Paige's case yesterday. No news, no new developments. In news of Candles for Paige, we are down to 80 candles now. As always, a reminder that candles go out after 48 hours. Remember to keep lighting candles for Paige and her three children. (Today is a holiday, remember to light a candle before you head off for your barbque!) Instructions for lighting candles for Paige are in the Missing thread, in this post. On This Day In History... ...in 1972, Bobby Fisher became the first American to win the International Chess Tournament. ...in 1989, Congress passed legislation requiring that all new cars be equipped with air bags. Naturally, after being proven to save lives, the air bags came under fire when small children were inured by air bags. Air bags use a small explosive device to deploy and can accelerate at a speed of 200 mph, so now, children are required to sit in the back seat, away from the air bags. (My air bag was deinstalled when my mother in law went away after a divorce...) ...in 1894, the town of Hinckley, Minnesota was completely destroyed by a forest fire, killing 440 people in the area. The area had been thoroughly logged using a technique called "slashing" that left behind enormous amounts of wood debris. Lumber yards were set very close to rail lines, where sparks from passing locomotives could easily ignite dry tinder. Drought conditions in 1894 set the stage, and on Sept 1, fires broke out near the rail lines and spread north. 350 people climbed aboard a train that had to pass through the fire but made it safely to West Superior, Wisconsin. Many residents made for the swamps, many perished by drowning. Others dived into a gravel pit that had filled with water and survived. 300,000 acres of woodlands burned with the town. 228 people died in Hinckley, at least 212 died in the surrounding area, including 23 Ojibwa. (Watch this space for October 8, when you will read about the worst fire disaster in recorded history, and it didn't happen in Chicago.) ...in 1959, Elizabeth Taylor signed with 20th Century Fox to make the blockbuster, Cleopatra. (You learned about her a few days ago.) Taylor signed for the unheard of sum of $1 million to play the role. She made her first film in 1942, There's One Born Every Minute at the age of 10, made history with Mickey Rooney in National Velvet and went the jump from child actress to adult siren in films like Father of the Bride and A Place In The Sun. Taylor was born - pay attention to this - in England of American parents. She is a subject of England, and was granted the title of Dame, along with Julie Andrews, by Queen Elizabeth II on New Year's Eve, 1999. ...in 1985, the wreck of the Titanic was found in it's resting place, about 400 miles east of Newfoundland. This all happened about a decade after Clive Cussler's Raise The Titanic! made the best seller lists. The ship was found by a joint venture of the French and United States. ...in 1864, Confederate General John Bell Hood evacuated Atlanta, as General William Tecumseh Sherman and the Union Army was about to cap a four month march to capture the Rebel's most vital supply center. Hood's army set fire to the Confederate munitions dumps to prevent the Union army from utilizing it. Sherman continued to hold the city against Hood's attacks until November, when Sherman began his infamous march to the sea. Sherman's orders were to burn anything that would be of value to the Confederate army, munitions makers, clothing mills and railway yards. The fire raged out of control and soon Atlanta was consumed by the fire. On the march to the sea, anything that would be of value to the Confederates was also destroyed. The war came to an end just a few months later. That's it. That's all we know as of 1:31 AM, EDT. |

Love it,KG...I have never had a mother-in-law (my ex's Mom & Dad had already passed) but I have heard of some real winners! I think my Mom is a great MIL...we still invite my ex to holiday gatherings so our son can still have the feeling of family. My brother greets my ex more enthusiastically than he does me!!! But that's ok...I like my ex better than I like my brother!!! |

Posts: 9,583 Best Show: 2258 Experience: 3+ # of Shows: 210 My Mood: | Yes, I did ![]() I've also seen the - ahem 'wedding party' - that goes with this lovely bride & groom I sure hope this was 'staged' and not a real wedding. If it is a real wedding, I kinda feel sorry for them being made so much fun of.....even if they are less than pretty people. I hope they are happy... |

Posts: 22,454 Best Show: 1300 Experience: 8 # of Shows: 272 | The wedding was OK, but not well planned. We didn't expect the bridal party to be in real bridesmaids dresses, but they were. And the bride wearing white is kinda silly when her 3-year old daughter preceeds her down the "aisle." The ceremony was in a park, and they didn't bother to reserve the pavillion. So it was just a bunch of people standing around, not sure they were in the right place. There was no music, until someone started humming the wedding march. The crowd only knew 2 lines of it. And the minister/justice of the peace used throwback vows that included "obey" for the bride, that she emphasized. The crew at the VFW hall had been asked to have dinner ready at 4:30. They served it at 5:45. By then, we had all been munching on the mints/M&Ms/peanuts mix that was out on all the tables. The only thing that kept us from going insane was the crayons someone had put out so we could draw on the paper tablecloths. I think this was the first wedding I was to that had dinner service on styrofoam plates. And I found out that the plan for the groom to join the army has been nixed. He can't stand to cut the apron strings. In fact, the couple's current apartment is the upstairs flat above his parents'. |
