Default Morning Update, June 29, 2009

There was one newsy item published over the weekend, otherwise, there were no new developments in Paige's case yesterday. On Saturday, the GJ Daily Sentinel published a follow-up on the remains that were found in Utah so many months ago. Otherwise? Nada. Zip. Zilch. Gnorscht. (The article is in the Missing and yesterday's update thread in case you missed it.)

In news of Candles for Paige we had 80 candles as of this post. Remember, candles go out after 48 hours so keep lighting candles for Paige, her family and her three children.

Instructions for lighting candles for Paige are in the Missing thread, in this post.

On this date in History...

...in 1613, London' Globe Theater burned down. It was the theater where almost every Shakespeare play made its premier.

A modern reproduction of the Globe.

...in 1956, Congress authorized the funding of the Federal Highway Act, which had been passed in 1955 and began the construction of the Interstate Highway system. President Eisenhower had been on the Army's first motorized convoy in 1919 that went from Washington to San Francisco on the Lincoln Highway, where he learned the value of good roads. The German Autobahn was another lesson for him that helped inspire the Interstate Highway System.

This sign was introduced in 1993 but
does not appear everywhere, yet. While
the I-system was signed into law by
President Eisenhower, the five stars
commemorate his work as General of
the Army in World War II.

...in 1985, Jim Pattison purchased a Rolls-Royce Phantom V limousine for $2,229,000.00. Yes, that's over $2 Million. The limo had been purchased by John Lennon in 1966 and had it painted in the psychedelic color scheme popular at the time.

That's it. That's all we know as of 12:01 AM, EDT.

That's an awful lot of money to pay for a used car.

And with an ugly paint job, to boot.

The more digging I do into the car, the more bizarre the story gets. Some people just shouldn't buy certain cars.

It was attacked in London by a little old lady with an umbrella - apparently, the Rolls-Royce is one of the symbols of British dignity and the paint job was an affront to her sensibilities.

Jim Patteson was the chairman of Ripley's Incorporated, he bought it to put it on display in a "Believe It or Not" museum. He titled it in South Carolina and had the plate "LENNON" assigned to it. In 1987, Patteson presented it to the Province of British Columbia where it was displayed, sparingly, at their museum of transportation. In 1993, it was transferred to Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, British Columbia where, are far as I know, it remains in storage.

It's still serviced by a Rolls-Royce dealer and is brought out for special occasions and fund raisers. You can read more about it here.

That is one butt-ugly car. Or, to be more precise, the paint is butt-ugly. The car itself is gorgeous.

Just goes to show you that some people have no taste except what's in their mouth.

Wow - 104 candles at 5:00 PM Central.

That's the second time we've gone over 100 candles in the last couple of weeks. Welcome back, to all of you candle lighters who have been missing!

Clearly the fact that you have the money to purchase something beautiful doesn't mean you actually deserve to own it. What he did to that car is a shame.

Well, in the long run, the paint job probably preserved the car. Since no one would really want to be seen in it, it never got driven, thus preserving it.

OTOH, out in California, there's a guy with a 1950 Chevrolet that has 432 miles on it. Yes, that's right, 432 miles.

I wouldn't really want to own either one of them, but it I had a choice, I'd take the Chevy.

I don't get people like that. It's like the people who buy beautiful china but never use it. Things were made to be used. Take care of them, yes, but use them.

DH met a guy at a car show a few weeks back who has a late '70s Lincoln with 1000 miles on it. Problem is, it also has the original oil.

Well, it's a car with a story. This is the story as it came to me. Whether or not you believe it is up to you.

Purchased new by Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Trueblood of Modesto. Shortly after purchasing this car, Mr. Trueblood took a day off to go fishing. While waiting for the 'big one'? to bite he witnessed a woman fall out of her boat. Mr. Trueblood jumped in to help only to fall victim of a fatal heart attack. Mrs. Trueblood returned the car home and placed it in the garage for the next 12 years. The odometer reading at that time (1962) was 413 miles.

Mrs. Trueblood lived next door to a used car lot owned by Mr. William E. Wilson (now 81 years old). Mr. Wilson spoke with her frequently and often told her he would like to buy the car for himself to keep. In 1962 the time had come. Mrs. Trueblood told Mr. Wilson she needed a car for her bookkeeper who didn'??t really care for the ol'?? Chevy and would prefer a Rambler. No problem. Mr. Wilson went down to the local Rambler dealer and bought a brand new one for $1,650.00 ($100.00 over cost) and made the swap.

He then took the car home and parked it with 433 actual miles. And there it sat for the next 45 years, occasionally being started and moved in and out of the garage. In 2007 Mr. Wilson decided to sell the car and started spreading the word around Modesto that the ol'?? Chevy with 433 miles on it was for sale. Many had heard about the car, but hardly anyone had ever laid eyes on it. In fact, according to Mr. Wilson he believes he only showed the car to about 5 people in 45 years. Word spread quickly about the car and soon a buyer arrived ready and willing to pay the $60,000.00 asking price. When Mr. Wilson told me the story of this car he complained heavily of the 'capital gains'? tax he was required to pay and wished he had never sold it. As of this writing, Mr. Wilson is still alive and well in Modesto and can verify the miles and originality of this car. Simply put, this is a true 100% factory original survivor (that includes the air in the tires).

This ol'?? Chevy now has 437 original miles and is most likely the world'??s lowest mileage 1950 Chev. Anyone who knows anything about old cars knows that this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. If you are looking for a safe investment, here it is.
